The campaign was officially launched at Damansara Specialist Hospital 2 (DSH2) with over 100 guests attended, comprising the members of the public, VIP guests, collaborators, media and content creators, aims to raise the awareness of breast cancer while supporting MAKNA's breast health initiatives. Among the notable names in attendance were the Deputy GM of MAKNA, Mr. Vemanna Appannah, and social media influencer Maryam You Narae, also known as Maryam Durian Kimchi.

The campaign's unique name is made up of two key elements of the cancer journey. The word "Wobbly" symbolises the vulnerability individuals face when battling breast cancer, while "Odyssey" mirrors the unique and courageous journey of each person coping with the disease. This aligns with Jobbie's ethos of spreading joy and advocating for a better quality of life.

During the launch, Jobbie rolled out its limited edition of 5,000 Jobbie Pink Jars specially designed with the "Pink Wobbly Breast Odyssey" label. Every jar features breast cancer awareness information with a striking pink design, symbolising the journey and courage of individuals affected by the disease. For every jar sold, RM1 will be donated to MAKNA to support its breast health programmes, helping to provide resources and care for those affected by breast cancer.

Chief Executive Officer of Jobbie, Mr. Victor Chin explained, "Jobbie's collaboration with MAKNA serves as a reminder for to all Malaysians to take an active role in understanding and promoting breast health. Early detection saves lives, and the "Pink Wobbly Breast Odyssey" encourages everyone to spread knowledge, support survivors and contribute to breast cancer research and care."

Mr. Victor Chin further highlighted just like Jobbie's believe on their peanut butter spreads joy, they would also like to spread some hope, cheer and support for breast cancer fighters and survivors through this initiative. Jobbie's commitment is to help Malaysians live better and healthier lives, and at the same time to inspire Malaysians be cognisant of the disease that impacts not only the patient but her family as well. Through this initiative, Jobbie is rallying the community and caregivers' support for each other and to take breast health seriously.

The launch event headlined a kaleidoscopic repertoire of health and wellness activities which suggest a holistic regime for breast health care. Guests enjoyed a yoga session which reiterates the importance of mental health for people living with cancer. The Wobbly Breast Hall of Fame exhibition featured information on the campaign as well as artwork inspired by the Wobbly Breast Design. All participants were treated to various fun experiential stations which included creating their very own piece of art and receiving a free breast cancer screening, generously provided by Damansara Specialist Hospital 2 (DSH2).

Breast cancer is the most prevalent form of cancer among females in Malaysia, accounting for 32% of all cancers detected in women. The risk of developing breast cancer increases with age, with a higher incidence among individuals above the age of 50.

Sadly, many cases are diagnosed late, with almost half of cases detected at Stage 3 or Stage 4, when treatment options become more limited and the chances of survival decrease. These statistics highlight the critical need for early detection and regular screenings, particularly for women over 40, to improve outcomes and reduce mortality rates associated with the disease.

The launch event enlisted a health expert and a cancer survivor to share practical insight on cancer care and management. Dr. Haliza Kamarudin, a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist of Damansara Specialist Hospital 2 (DSH2), spoke about women's wellness, emphasizing the importance of early screenings like mammograms and self-examinations at different stages of life.

Women's life experiences are impacted by various health risks and implications throughout various live stages, such as hormonal changes, menopause and most rampantly breast cancer. "For our role in gynecology, we do emphasize on women's general health, hygiene and well-being and in the case of breast cancer, advise certain ways to manage it with treatments, hormonal therapies and overall women's health management plan. Ultimately, it's key for women to stay informed about breast health and monitor the risks and changes to their body and observe a healthy lifestyle regime. Regular screenings and early detection are key in preventing getting breast cancer or take steps to manage it at early stages," said Dr. Haliza.

Host, cancer survivor and advocate Choo Mei Sze, shared her personal battle and triumph over cancer, giving encouragement to those facing the same challenges. "Going through cancer was a lonely journey filled with ups and downs especially at a young age, so having the support from my family and love ones helped to make was very important. The key is to stay strong and positive and take steps to manage the disease with the right information and treatment. I am honoured to be part of this initiative to share my personal journey with the hope of inspiring others who are fighting their own battles."

Abbott x Glucerna Living Well With Diabetes #StartsWithYou Campaign

The Glucerna® #StartsWithYou campaign calls on Malaysians to adopt positive lifestyle changes and share their personal journey with diabetes management in Glucerna® Lifestyle Change Program (GLCP), which provides education and resources on good nutrition and physical activity to help people with diabetes.

I'm making a change today for a healthier self! In conjunction with November's Diabetes Awareness Month, Abbott announced the launch of the Glucerna® #StartsWithYou campaign, a meaningful initiative that encourages Malaysians to take control of their health and manage diabetes effectively. The campaign highlights success stories of Malaysians who participated in a four-week lifestyle intervention program incorporating good nutrition and physical exercise. With the aim to galvanize people with diabetes to live fuller and healthier lives, Abbott has been promoting these success stories and inviting people to share their journey with diabetes management.

The launch event on Abbott's Glucerna® #StartsWithYou Campaign was held at Botanica + Co, Bamboo Hills, Kuala Lumpur. The event addressed the alarming rise of diabetes in Malaysia. According to the National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS), there is an estimated 3.6 million Malaysians - or 15.6% of the adult population, living with diabetes, and there are many more who are unaware of their diabetic state. Uncontrolled diabetes can impact overall health and cause complications like heart disease, nerve or kidney damage. Small lifestyle modifications can make a big impact on diabetes management and overall health.

The Importance of Lifestyle Adjustments for Effective Diabetes Management Insights from Dr. Nina Mazera Mohd Said and Datuk Dr. Zanariah Hussein

Dr. Nina Mazera Mohd Said, Abbott's Nutrition Medical Director in Malaysia, shared the awareness and management of diabetes. "The prevalence of diabetes remains high in Malaysia, so it's important to help individuals adopt healthy habits and strategies to manage their condition," said Dr. Nina.

"The Glucerna® Lifestyle Change Program has supported many people with diabetes manage their glucose levels through positive lifestyle changes including good nutrition and exercise. Today, we are happy to showcase some success stories to empower more Malaysians with diabetes to build healthy habits." Dr. Nina highlighted the importance of adopting a healthier lifestyle for managing diabetes achievable and sustainable.

Datuk Dr. Zanariah Hussein, Head of the Endocrine Unit at Putrajaya Hospital, shared statistics data on Malaysia's diabetes rates, and mentioned untreated diabetes can lead to severe health complications. "Most Malaysians living with diabetes have obesity or overweight¹, so structured lifestyle interventions, nutritional management, and a robust support system can help improve their weight and condition," said Dr. Zanariah.

Dr. Zanariah highlighted that with the comprehensive approaches which are included in GLCP and combine with the support of doctors and dietitians, these can lead to better improvement in managing diabetes control, weight management and better quality of life.

The Success Story of Ainaa's Journey with Glucerna® Lifestyle Change Program (GLCP)

At the event, Ainaa Munirah Pang, a 39 years old chef, shared her journey in achieving her target glucose levels with the help of the Glucerna® Lifestyle Change Program (GLCP). Diagnosed with type 2 diabetes at the age of 27, Ainaa faced the challenge of adhering to a healthy and consistent regime, especially being surrounded by sweet temptations at her job.

The four-week lifestyle intervention program guided her on a path to better health. She received the access to expert support and a community of like-minded participants who shared common goals, challenges and resources to help manage their diabetes.

"Joining the program was life-changing," said Ainaa. "It wasn't just about controlling my glucose level but also about finding a community of support and making small changes that added up to a big difference."

Ainaa's journey has shown the importance of structured lifestyle changes in diabetes management, with proper nutrition, exercise and guidance can make a significant improvement.

Glucerna® Lifestyle Change Program (GLCP) - Taking Control of Diabetes Starts with You and the Support of Others

The GLCP, which started in 2021, includes a guide on diabetes management and information on balanced diet, diabetes-specific nutrition formula, exercise and the importance of regular glucose monitoring. Participants also learn how to cope with diabetes burnout and other challenges that can derail their commitment to diabetes care. In addition, they receive support from a group of trained doctors and dietitians, and like-minded participants who share common goals, challenges and resources to help them better manage their condition. More than 200 adults in Malaysia have participated in the program and have improved their diabetes.

Dietitian Indra Balaratnam's Nutrition Guide and Tips

"While there are many factors in managing diabetes, nutrition remains critical," said Indra Balaratnam, a consultant dietitian. "Individuals with diabetes need to be aware of their eating habits and make informed choices that incorporate a variety of foods in moderation. Whether through meal planning, smart snacking, or cooking at home with natural ingredients, it's important to follow a balanced diet rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains and lean proteins." Indra suggested even simple steps with consistency is the key to maintain steady glucose levels.

During the event, Indra demonstrated how to constitute a balanced diet by using the Malaysian Healthy Plate Model: Suku Suku Separuh #QuarterQuarterHalf
1/4 portion of carbohydrates
1/4 portion of proteins
1/2 portion of vegetables and fruits
as a guide for proper portioning in our meals.

She also performed a simple cooking demonstration on using simple yet healthy ingredients including Glucerna to make up a healthy delicious meal.

How Diabetes-Specific Nutrition Formula Can Help

Glucerna®, a scientifically-formulated diabetes-specific nutrition formula, is integral to the GLCP approach. Clinical studies have demonstrated that Glucerna® effectively manages blood glucose levels by providing a steady release of glucose. Research published in Diabetes Care found that individuals with diabetes who consumed Glucerna® maintained glucose levels within the target range up to 90% of the time after just four weeks.² Glucerna's unique formulation includes low glycaemic index carbohydrates, which help minimise post-meal spikes, alongside essential nutrients that support overall health.

The Glucerna® #StartsWithYou campaign encourages everyone to share their personal journey with diabetes management. Participants who send in their stories to the Abbott Nutrition Careline (wecare@abbott.com) will receive a Glucerna® Wellness Pack.

Join me on this journey - because it all #StartsWithYou.

AmLife Launches AmHope Rehabilitation Centre CSR-Driven In Celebration Of AmLife 10th Anniversary

Associate Professor of University Kebangsaan Malaysia Reiterates The 90-Day Golden Window As Key For Effective Stroke Recovery

What is rehabilitation?

Rehabilitation is an essential part of individual health coverage with promotion of good health, prevention of disease, treatment and palliative care. Rehabilitation can reduce the impact of a broad range of health conditions, including disease (acute or chronic), illness or injury. Rehabilitation complements other health interventions, such as medical and surgical interventions, helping to facilitate recovery and achieve the best outcome possible. In addition, rehabilitation can help to prevent, reduce or manage complications associated with many health conditions, such as in the context of spinal cord injury, stroke or fractures.

Founder and President of AmLife, Mr. Lew Mun Yee

Demographic change brings urgent needs

The United Nations has projected Malaysia to become an aged nation by 2030, with 15% of the population comprising the elderly. With societal aging intensifies, healthcare costs rise, these will further increase the burden on society. Therefore, the health status of seniors requires urgent attention.

Seniors face various age-related issues like muscle loss (Sarcopenia), cardiovascular setbacks and stroke. Globally, 15 million people suffer from stroke each year. In Malaysia, degenerative diseases are on the rise, and stroke is ranking as the third most common cause of death with an estimated 50,000 new stroke cases annually. Research indicates that up to 80% of strokes are preventable through lifestyle changes, including quality sleep and proper healthcare interventions.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber

The importance of quality sleep

The National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) 2019 highlighted that individuals with insomnia have a 30% higher chance of developing cardiovascular issues, including stroke. Quality sleep is the key to repair and to regenerate the body, which would cushion cardiovascular and degenerative diseases.

A beacon of hope with AmHope

In view of the needs on current healthcare industry in Malaysia, together in celebration of 10th Anniversary, sleep health specialist AmLife International launches its unique rehabilitation and regenerative centre driven by CSR-designed to create a meaningful impact on the lives of Malaysia's seniors affected by modern degenerative diseases, especially stroke in the country.

Founder and President of AmLife, Mr. Lew Mun Yee said that the company has helped countless people to regain their health over the past decade through its sleep health education and healthcare solutions. "During this journey, we discovered that sleep disorders can affect cardiovascular health, thereby increasing the risk of stroke. Stroke is not just an individual problem, but one that cripples families physically and financially.

"To mark AmLife's 10th anniversary, we are investing RM1. 4 million to establish AmHope - a rehabilitation and regenerative centre designed to help seniors overcome the challenges of stroke and other physical health issues, enabling them to live a dignified and quality life. AmHope represents a significant advancement in stroke rehabilitation and a beacon of hope for those facing these challenges," said Mr. Lew.

Electric Potential Therapy with DeepZleep Therapeutic Medical Device for regenerative sleep

Give back to society: AmHope charity-inspired approach

The 90 days following a stroke are a critical period for brain recovery, engaging in rehabilitation during this time can significantly increases the chance of full recovery. Unfortunately, many stroke patients miss this crucial window due to financial constraints, resulting in lasting physical impairments.

Electric Potential Therapy with DeepZleep Therapeutic Medical Device

To address this issue, AmLife offers substantial financial aid to assist stroke patients facing such challenges. Patients who present a hospital medical report within 90 days of their stroke can receive physiotherapy for only RM30 per session (normal market rate is RM150 per session). This 80% financial relief also applies to all equipment and high-function treatments at the centre. The unique aspect of AmHope rehab centre is that it allows those who can afford to pay for treatment to access high-quality and cost-effective care, while their fees help finance treatments for those who cannot afford them - embodying a charity-inspired model of care.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)

Innovative treatments provided at AmHope

Research shown that recovered stroke patients will likely encounter a second stroke within three to five years after their first recovery. AmHope offers pioneering technology in the form of HPHT (High Potential Hydrogen Therapy) to help lessen or prevent the chance of experiencing a second encounter with stroke. In addition, the Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy can accelerate healing process for various conditions, including chronic wounds, injuries (including brain). One can also benefit from AmLife's signature Japanese patented technology - the Electric Potential Therapy which recharges the body's regenerative and cardiovascular abilities while one is resting or sleeping, which is most suitable for immobile stroke patients.

High Potential Hydrogen Therapy (HPHT) and Remote Ischemic Preconditioning (RIPC)

"As of now, we have a shuttle service solely for transporting customers. This service offers an alternative for those facing transportation issues, with a fee of RM1/km. In the near future, AmHope will roll out a mobile truck which houses various rehab equipment to serve the local communities," said Mr. Lew.

Associate Professor Dr. Khoo Ching Soong, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia

The recovery journey

According to Associate Professor Dr. Khoo Ching Soong from Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, recovering from a stroke is different for everyone. Nonetheless, the first 90 days are essentially a critical time window. During the first few months after a stroke, patients need intensive rehabilitation to help recover or improve their motor, speech and cognitive functions, lifestyle changes, and mental health support for the best chances of their stroke recovery.

"We have many methods to facilitate their stroke recovery. In addition to rehabilitation therapy and exercise, there are alternative ways to help stroke patients to recover their functional independence such as repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), which is a non-invasive medical procedure, holds the potential to benefit a range of motor and cognitive outcomes after a stroke," said Dr. Khoo.

Physiotherapy and rehabilitation service

As adverse as it seems, stroke does not have to be the beginning of the end. According to American Stroke Association, approximately 10% of stroke survivors recover almost completely, and 25% recover with only minor impairments. Many continue to improve over time, and with intensive, targeted rehabilitation, functional recovery can be possible even years after the event. The proportional recovery rule suggests that, on average, patients can regain around 70% (+/-15%) of lost function within 3-6 months after a stroke.

Physiotherapy and rehabilitation service

Besides that, keeping active is the key too. A decade-long study involving over 16,000 healthy men revealed a striking finding: those with higher levels of cardiorespiratory fitness had a 68% lower risk of stroke and stroke-related death compared to those with the lowest fitness levels.

Director of Senior Care, AmHope, Dr. Choo Hao Jian

Director of Senior Care at AmHope, Dr. Choo Hao Jian advised that when it comes to preventing non-communicable diseases, especially stroke, few interventions are as effective and universally beneficial, such as keeping active and having regular exercise. As a Regenerative Medicine and Geriatric Wellness Specialist, he said, "keeping mobile and active to avoid being sedentary and prevent many cardiovascular and muscle loss issues helps in avoiding a stroke. Even for those recovering from a stroke or dealing with old injuries, physiotherapy and rehabilitation are essential, helping them regain mobility and return to an active lifestyle."

The Cheese Mania Showcase By Real California Milk

Real California Milk: Look For The Seal ~ A Feast For The Senses
Feast, Fun and Flavors!

Say cheese and stay smile :)

Cheese is a delicious type of dairy food. Cheese comes in hundreds of textures and flavors, and it plays a popular role in many cuisines worldwide. Some people are concerned that cheese is high in fat, sodium and calories. Nevertheless, cheese is also an excellent source of protein, calcium and several other nutrients.

I was delighted to be invited to join a day of cheese fun at The Natural Cheese Mania Showcase. Hosted by Real California Milk at Double Tree Hotel The Intermark Kuala Lumpur, the event drew guests ranging from local bloggers and content creators to trade partners, all participating in engaging activities. Attendees enjoyed a variety of delectable cheesy prizes and mouth-watering cheese dishes throughout the event.

California cheeses are made from high quality milk that is the result of good weather condition, good diet (grain fed cows), good water and good exercise. California is the top dairy producing state in the United States. The dairy plants undergo strict USDA inspections to ensure they follow the strict government regulations with high food safety standard.

Arriving guests were treated with a lovely door gift goodie bag and a special welcome drink named KL Fog Mocktail with CC Foam, while enjoying the captivating cheese product showcase. The showcase allowed guests to explore an array of Real California Milk natural cheeses, ranging from the commodity to artisan cheeses. California-origin cheese included Cheddar, Mozzarella, Pepper Jack and Monterey Jack. Artisanal cheese included Blue Cheese, Smoked Cheese and Organic Cheese from California.

Guests were thoroughly impressed by the wide choice of natural California cheese products from brands like Food for Friends, Fiscalini, Sierra Nevada, Point Reyes for their diverse flavours and culinary applications. It is not surprising that Real California Cow's Milk Cheeses won 31 Awards at the recent American Cheese Society Meeting.

Another crowd favourite was the interactive photobooth with props and slogans promoting Real California Milk. Guests were encouraged to share their photos on social media using the hashtags #RealCaliforniaMilkMY, #RealCaliforniaMilk and #RealCaliforniaCheese

Guests were having a chance to savour six distinct types of cheese: Cheddar Sharp, Monterey Jack, Creamy Jalapeno Jack, Smokehouse Jack, Truffle Toma and Blue Cheese. The unique qualities and flavours of each variety were highlighted, giving them an insight into the finer qualities of each cheese variety.

The event transitioned into another activity where guests enthusiastically engaged in creating their DIY cheese boards, combining an assortment of cheeses with other food items. With guidance, guests learned how to arrange a variety of cheeses and food items in visually appealing displays.
