On last weekend, I was invited to attend Dato Dr Edmund Lee's talk on Back To School with Healthy Feet & Spine, at Sunfeet International Rehabilitation Centre. I gained valuable information on the myth and facts of flat feet and the current treatment available for flat feet.

Situated under one roof with Super Pharmacy Megastore PJ, Sunfeet International Rehabilitation Centre specialized on orthotic and prosthetic solutions, provides professional consultation and correction to mobility training and confidence building for their patients. The holistic approach of the centre allows patients to feel at ease and in control while giving the special attention and care to their feet.

Nice spacious gymnasium inside the centre

The centre is spacious and clean, with facilities such as occupational therapy and sports rehabilitation. There is a small play area for kids and a gymnasium apart from treatment rooms. The centre also has a retail section to sell range of orthotics shoes, custom made orthotics insole, Sunfeet healthy school shoes for kids, Sunfeet diabetic, orthopedic and therapeutic footwear.

What is an Orthotic?

A foot orthotic is a prescribed medical appliance, custom-made device that can be inserted into the shoe to support, align, prevent and/or accommodate foot deformities and improve foot function. Used in conjunction with appropriate footwear, a foot orthotic can be effective in helping to treat a number of foot and lower limb problems including heel, arch and forefoot pain, shin splints, as well as pain and complications related to health conditions, such as diabetes and arthritis.

The session began with introduction and sharing by the friendly Dato Dr Edmund Lee. Dato Dr Edmund Lee presented and talked on several common foot problems and his pursuit to increase awareness and to educate the public on foot health education, with his mission to provide the highest level of comprehensive foot care in Malaysia so that every person can put his or her best foot forward.

I learn that wearing the right footwear is important, just like using the right skincare product for our delicate skin. This is especially important for kids during their crucial growing up stage from age 1 to age 14. A young foot is flexible foot that can be prone to hypermobility and lacks muscle strength. As a result, a supportive shoe is necessary.

"Without that support, children are in danger of developing flat feet, sore knees, shin splints and even back pain." mentioned by Dato Dr Edmund Lee during his speech presentation.

In accordance with Dato Dr Edmund Lee's mission to increase the awareness of foot health education in Malaysia, Sunfeet International Rehabilitation Centre is having Back To School collection features brand new styles designed to liberate movement, providing kids and students with the freedom to wonder in comfort with removable orthotic insole. The black and white school shoes come with a pair flat feet correction orthotic insoles which enable the kids and students to feel all day comfort and support.

Besides that, Sunfeet is also having specially designed spine protection school bags for kids and students.

In the speech presentation, Dato Dr Edmund Lee continued shared that there are 6 foot type, namely Normal, Flat, Pronated, Severe Flat, Severe High Arch, High Arch. Early detection and prevention through foot health education is important especially for kids age 1 to age 4, before they turn into mature stage which will caused more complicated treatment needed.

Dato Dr Edmund Lee stressed that flat foot is not a disease, it is just a periodic phenomenon and with early detection would be able to provide effective solution to young foot.

How do we know we belong to which type of foot? Sunfeet International Rehabilitation Centre provides FREE Foot Screening and Consultation, and since now is the year end long school holiday time, parents could take this golden opportunity to visit the centre and have free foot checking and to choose a perfectly-fitting school shoes which provide the correct support and cushioning for young kid's growing feet.

Dato Dr Edmund Lee also shared tips on choosing the suitable footwear, indeed this is very helpful especially for parents when choosing footwear for their kid/kids.

  • Try to buy and test the shoes in evening time as this is the time where our feet expands the most.
  • Test the shoes by inserting two fingers between the gap of feet and shoe at the back or front shoe, as to allow a space for kid's growing feet.
  • Test and try by wearing both shoes together so that we can feel the actual wearing on whether or not it is comfortable, not too loose or too tight.

  3. Shoe insoles or inserts are the cushy inside part of the shoes that support your feet. Quite often the importance of a good quality orthotic insole is overlooked. This is because most outdoor shoes promise to lend support, cushioning, and comfort. If you looking for shoe inserts for kids then KidSole is a good option.
